Kuansin Engebretson's Musical Beginnings Studio
Piano Performers
In a note-reading arcade game, points are awarded for piano technique and
note-reading skills; correct notes are a pleasant challenge now as opposed
to a hectic process wrought with tedium. The student "wins" the game by
striking notes on his individual keyboard. Each step in learning a new
piece, thus new concepts, is monitored by both the computer and teacher.
The computer makes working on a problem seem effortless-and the program is
gently encouraging in its choice of words. The student is in control of the
tempo and which hand to work on first when tackling a passage of music. When
at last the piece is learned, the student will be invited to go to the
"Concert Hall" to perform this well practiced
piece with the computer "Orchestra". An enthusiastic audience is waiting.
"Bravo! Great Job!" They shout as they give the student a standing ovation
when it is well deserved. A reporter comes to take the performer's picture
and writes a glowing review, and the teacher presents the student a
certificate of achievement.
As Piano Performers is striving to bring music education into
the 21st century by combining computer technology with traditional piano,
students experience positive feedback, and expert tutoring from the computer
and teacher in an interesting weekly lesson. Lessons are individualized but
in a small group. The student is able to concentrate on his/her progress yet
has the support of peers in the group. Our piano labs are equipped with
laptop computers and attached five-octave full size piano keyboards both in
our studio and brought directly to our students in their schools. Each student
is given an opportunity to perform in a recital at the end of each semester.
Piano Performers is appropriate for Children 6 years and older and adults.
